Continuing Education
The ACVIM Foundation is proud to sponsor educational and media events that heighten the awareness of advances made in veterinary internal medicine. The Foundation is also proud to sponsor a Grantsmanship workshop which is held every two years at the ACVIM Forum (www.acvimforum.org). The purpose of this seminar is to provide veterinarians and residents with information necessary for competitive clinical investigation grants.
Clinical Trials Symposium
The ACVIM Foundation was proud to be a sponsor of the Clinical Trials Symposium held at the annual conference of the Veterinary Cancer Society in Kansas City, MO on November 3-4, 2004. This mini-symposium, described as the first of its kind in veterinary oncology, featured state-of-the-art presentations by human cancer investigators, regulatory agencies (FDA and USDA), and a veterinarian in industry. Topics included "Biostatistics for Clinical Trials" and "Business Realities of Developing Veterinary Cancer Therapeutics." 133 people were in attendance, including 45 students/interns/residents/technicians.
A CD of symposium materials (lecture notes, outline of slides presented) is available for purchase for ACVIM members at a cost of $40.00. Students, technicians, interns, and residents may purchase the CD for $20.00. The Clinical Trials Symposium proceedings can be purchased from Veterinary Cancer Society through their website at http://vetcancersociety.org.
Grantsmanship Workshop
An interactive workshop on Grantsmanship was presented at the 2006 ACVIM Forum by the ACVIM Foundation Scientific Review Committee, co-sponsored by the ACVIM Foundation. The Workshop was designed to help participants learn more about the basics of grant writing, such as what makes a grant fundable, common mistakes to avoid, and how to prepare a budget. The workshop was focused on the grant proposals to be submitted to the ACVIM Foundation but was general enough to help those applying to other funding institutions as well. Residents were especially encouraged to attend.
Workshop modules included:
- The Proposal Review Process
- Research Grants: Formulas for Success
- Common Strengths and Weaknesses of Grant Proposals
The workshop concluded with 30 minutes of question-and-answers with a panel including ACVIM Foundation Scientific Review Committee members.
