Monday, August 13, 2007

Dr. Wendy WareWendy A. Ware, DVM, MS, ACVIM (Cardiology), Chair of the ACVIM Board of Regents, has just published a textbook and is the second ACVIM board member to generously donate a portion of the book's royalties to support clinical studies funded by the ACVIM Foundation.

The ACVIM Foundation thanks Dr. Ware for supporting clinical investigations that will advance animal health and help us achieve our most important goal: longer and healthier lives for animals.

Cardiovascular Disease in Small Animal Medicine
Wendy A. Ware, DVM, MS, ACVIM (Cardiology)
Manson Publishing
U.S. Distributor: Blackwell Publishing (www.blackwellpublishing.com/vet/)
240 pages

Small animal practitioners who want a practical clinical reference book on cardiology should take a look at "Cardiovascular Disease in Small Animal Medicine," written by Dr. Wendy Ware, Iowa's only Board-certified cardiologist.

"For practitioners to effectively treat a patient, the underlying cause(s) of the animal's clinical signs must be identified," Dr. Ware said. "My goal was to provide practitioners with an easily-navigated and practical guide to the diagnosis and etiologic differentiation of common clinical manifestations of heart diseases."

With over 25 years of experience in veterinary cardiology, Dr. Ware takes a practical approach to summarize features and therapeutic approaches to common cardiac abnormalities, focusing on how to differentiate underlying disease processes and management options.

Practitioner-friendly features of the book include extensive visual images, with over 570 figures and 65 summary tables to illustrate various cardiovascular disease conditions and key concepts.

The book is easily-navigated with three distinct sections for quick reference. The initial chapters (1-5) review the normal cardiovascular system and common methods used for cardiac evaluation. Chapters 6-17 contain overviews of common clinical problems, approaches to differentiating these clinical manifestations of disease, and management of heart failure and arrhythmias. Finally, more detailed information about specific cardiovascular diseases is organized anatomically in Chapters 18-25.

ACVIM Board Member donates portion of book royalties to ACVIM Foundation

Dr. Mary Rose ParadisMary Rose Paradis, DVM, DiplACVIM (Large Animal Internal Medicine), Chair of the ACVIM Board of Regents, and Associate Professor at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, has just published her first textbook - and is generously donating a portion of the royalties to support further clinical studies funded by the ACVIM Foundation.

Equine Neonatal Medicine, published by Elsevier, features the latest advances in equine neonatology that can significantly increase the survival rates of critically ill foals. The author's intent: to help veterinary students and practicing veterinarians keep newborn horses in top physical condition.

Unlike most veterinary textbooks, each chapter in Dr. Paradis's book presents a real life case that includes pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of disease; as well as pharmacology, nutrition, assessment, and high-risk pregnancies. Sixteen authors contributed cases.

"What teaching has taught me over the last two decades is that engaging students in real life cases is one of the most important factors in learning," Paradis says. "Telling stories or presenting actual examples allows students to become active participants in solving the cases."

The ACVIM Foundation thanks Dr. Paradis supporting clinical investigations that will advance animal health and are at the heart of the Foundation's mission.

ACVIM matching grant up to $50,000 for individual donations

Tuesday, February 07, 2006

The ACVIM Foundation is excited to announce a $1.7 million fundraising goal to be achieved by 2008. When we meet this objective, we will be able to distribute over $1 million dollars for animal health studies specific to the specialties of the ACVIM by 2008.

Over the next few years, our Foundation will be able to substantially raise the number of grants awarded and the size of grants awarded for animal health studies. This is a direct benefit to us, as specialists, and to our patients. Our support ultimately will generate new knowledge that will further our profession and ultimately enhance our ability to diagnose and treat animal disease.

The ACVIM Board of Regents have demonstrated their commitment to this goal by offering an ACVIM matching grant up to $50,000 for individual donations. All individual donations will be matched this year (October 2006 through September 2007), up to the total of $50,000. We thank the ACVIM for this commitment.
