ACVIM Foundation People Passionate about
Animal Wellness (PPAW) Committee

Who we are – Amy’s story

My name is Amy Mack. I am an ACVIM (American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine) Foundation volunteer and I am organizing a group of animal lovers who are passionate about animal health.

I first learned about the ACVIM Foundation through the Board-certified Internal Medicine Veterinarian who was treating my then 14 year old terrier mix, Brindal. His diagnosis: mega esophagus caused by Myasthenia gravis. No one thought he would survive the weekend, but with close attention by the veterinarian and lots of TLC, Brindal is alive and kicking—and in remission at the whopping age of 18!

My husband rescued Brindal from the Atlanta Humane Society in 1991. To us, he is a member of the family and we were going to do whatever it took to make him better. This is the common theme I have heard from other pet owners. And though sadly not everyone will have the same happy ending, we did, we believe with organization and commitment many more pet owners can give our four-legged family members the care they deserve, the best care they can get.

The volunteer group that I am organizing will bring together the hearts and minds of animal lovers from all over the country. Our focus is simple: empowering people to know what choices are available in veterinary medicine and overall animal health care. Some of us have had animals with complicated health issues and many of us were lucky to have a great healthcare team which pointed us in the right direction for help. By working together in our local communities, we will be able to disseminate important information to other animal lovers that we hope will generate longer and healthier lives for our pets. This is the ultimate goal of the ACVIM Foundation and it is our committee’s as well.

Our Objectives

Our vision is for this committee to be an avenue where we can share our stories about the animals we love (there are already some posted on the ACVIM Foundation web site) and work together to create informational and educational materials for animal lovers e.g. “Empowering Pet Owners: Making the most of your Veterinary Healthcare Team” (in addition to other needs that we may have) as well as other marketing materials. Our priority is to identify and fill the knowledge gaps that exist for animal owners and ultimately, raise awareness about specialty medicine.

Our monthly conference calls provide a forum for us to get to know each other, share ideas/suggestions about what pet owners need regarding specialty medicine, and work together to create products (leaflets, materials, etc.) that we can share with the community-at-large.
