Urgent Study Grants

ACVIM Foundation
Urgent Study Grant Overview

The ACVIM Foundation is committed to funding studies that have direct implications on the practice of veterinary internal medicine. To this end, the Foundation has created a fund to specifically address urgent research needs. If research is considered to be of an urgent nature, a grant proposal can be submitted at any time outside of the normal review cycle. This proposal will be evaluated by the Scientific Review Committee in an expedited fashion. The intent of this grant is to allow ACVIM-member investigators of urgent and time-sensitive problems to have rapid access to funding outside the confines of the normal (annual) grant cycle.

Qualifying Studies

Proposals that may qualify for the Emergency Study Grant include those relating to natural or man-made disasters, epidemics and epizootics, zoonoses, or recently discovered infectious or toxic conditions, as they pertain to clinical veterinary medicine or to the health of veterinary professionals and the public. The emergence of novel and clinically important strains of influenza virus, and the North American Rabies epizootic are examples. The ACVIM Foundation welcomes grant applications from active Diplomates and co-principal investigators (residents enrolled in ACVIM-approved residency programs and/or non-ACVIM Diplomates). Grant awards will be based on the urgency of the subject, the merits of the proposal, and the availability of funds.

Available Funds

Proposals for funding up to $20,000 will be considered.

Application and Review Process

This grant will be subject to the same application process already in place at the ACVIM Foundation (Revised Application Guidelines.pdf). However, applications for this grant will be accepted on a continuous basis, and processed in an expedited manner. If the chair of the Scientific Review committee deems the proposal to be appropriate for this grant, it will be reviewed by the committee, and the primary investigator notified within 4 weeks.
